@alastair campbell recently mentioned the Army Leadership Code during the excellent The Rest is Politics podcast in the context of a discussion about political leadership. That piqued my interest so I took a look.
The Code is an excellent source for any organisation thinking about how to clearly explain its expectations of its leaders.
As the Code states, "leadership is a human endeavour" - an important concept that can get lost sometimes in the wealth of management literature on the topic. Allied to that is the focus on living the values (courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment) and seven leadership behaviours.
Although there are aspects of the Code that are less applicable to the corporate environment, there is much that translates perfectly. For example, the leadership behaviours include "leading by example": "All leaders are role models, and as an Army leader you must actively
demonstrate our Values in everything you do; "encourage thinking": " Giving people the opportunity to think and suggest ideas demonstrates Respect for Others, and generates
trust and confidence, which builds Loyalty." and "Strive for Team Goals": "Teams will always achieve more than the individual, but the difference between good and great teams is usually the degree of team spirit that bonds them together."
Overall, a rich source of inspiration with a great deal to offer corporate leaders.
